Running Gait Analysis: Why Your Running Form Matters

Running Gait Analysis: Why Your Running Form Matters

How you run matters as much as how far or fast you run. Running gait analysis—a detailed assessment of your movement patterns—can reveal inefficiencies that lead to injury, wasted energy, or both. For endurance athletes in Sydney, understanding your gait is often the first step toward injury prevention and performance gains.

What Is Running Gait Analysis?

Gait analysis is a systematic evaluation of how your body moves through the running cycle. A clinician observes your running mechanics—foot strike pattern, knee alignment, hip stability, and upper body posture—either visually or with the help of video and motion-capture technology. The goal is to identify movement patterns that place excess stress on joints, muscles, or connective tissue.

Common gait issues include overpronation (excessive inward foot roll), overstriding (landing too far ahead of your body), weak hip stability, and excessive forward lean. None of these are necessarily “wrong,” but they can increase injury risk if left unaddressed.

How Gait Faults Lead to Injury

Repetitive impact is the foundation of running. When you take 1,000+ steps per kilometre, small inefficiencies compound. A minor knee valgus (inward collapse) pattern sustained over weeks or months can lead to patellofemoral pain. Weak glute activation forces your IT band and hamstrings to compensate, eventually causing tightness and pain.

The good news: these patterns are correctable. Performance programs for runners include gait retraining and strength work designed to address your specific movement faults.

What Happens During an Assessment

A thorough gait analysis begins with a history—your current or past injuries, training volume, and goals. The clinician will then observe you running, typically on a treadmill or over ground, from multiple angles. They’ll assess how your foot contacts the ground, how your knees track, where your hips sit, and how your trunk stabilizes.

Video review allows you to see your own patterns in slow motion, making the feedback tangible and actionable. The clinician will then discuss what they’ve found and recommend specific corrective exercises or drills to improve your mechanics.

The Link Between Gait and Performance

Efficient running form isn’t just about injury avoidance—it’s about speed and endurance. A runner who overrides wastes energy pushing against the ground. A runner with poor hip stability loses power transfer from lower to upper body. By improving these patterns, many runners find they can run faster with less effort.

This is especially valuable for endurance athletes preparing for longer distances, where fatigue exaggerates poor form and increases injury risk in the final kilometres.

When to Consider Gait Analysis

If you’re experiencing lower limb overuse injuries or have a history of recurring pain, gait analysis should be part of your assessment. It’s also valuable if you’re training for a goal race and want to optimise your mechanics, or if you’re returning from injury and need clearance to resume full training.

At Sydney Running Performance, we integrate gait analysis with rehabilitation and performance programs to ensure your movement patterns support your training goals and keep you healthy for the long term.
